Honors Math 5A/5B

Academic Year Mathematics

Honors Math 5A/5B and Honors Math 5C/5D together cover a full year's curriculum for advanced fifth or sixth graders.

In this course, students master the topics they’ll need to succeed in Prealgebra. Students finish their study of the arithmetic of fractions, decimals, and negative integers. They are also introduced to the basics of algebra, measuring three-dimensional solids, factors and multiples, statistics and data, sequences, and ratios.

Like in previous AoPS Academy courses, students strengthen their mathematical modeling and deductive reasoning skills by working through our challenging word problems and puzzles.

Student Placement

To determine if your child is ready for this course, have them take our Placement Test. If your child is not ready for this course, please consider Honors Math 4A/4B or Honors Math 4C/4D.

If you believe your student is beyond Honors Math 5A/5B, please consider Honors Math 5C/5D. Please note that sixth graders without prior experience with the Beast Academy curriculum are often best-served by starting with Honors Math 5A/5B or Honors Math 5C/5D rather than moving on to Prealgebra in the AoPS Online School.

Format

All classes are held in a small-size (10-16 students) videoconferencing classroom run by an expert instructor.

Curriculum

Beast Academy is an elementary school math curriculum developed by Art of Problem Solving to give students the problem-solving foundation they'll need to succeed in any intellectual endeavor. This course covers the Beast Academy 5A and 5B Guide and Practice books. This Alignment Chart shows the curriculum standards covered in the book chapters.

"Our homeschooled son is extremely gifted in math and science.  He really feels at home at AoPS Academy.  Through coaching and personal attention at AoPS, he achieved a 5 in AP Calculus at 11 years old and a 4 in AP Statistics at 12.  He also achieved an 800 on SAT II math at 12 years old.  Our son feels very comfortable in the atmosphere of AoPS, where being gifted in math is not looked down on, but treated with respect.  He has truly found his peers at AoPS Academy.

AoPS Academy allows my son to be himself, learn that there are other kids well advanced in math, and gives him the confidence to know that it is OK to be great in math, and that other people will respect and value his ability."
