Curriculum
Each 18-week term will cover 2 units, with each unit featuring a long-term project that integrates a variety of reading, writing, critical thinking, and grammar skills.
Honors LA 4A
- Narrative Writing: Students explore influential texts of the Revolutionary period from a language arts perspective, including misleading texts on both sides, and learn to create quality narratives of their own.
- Expository Essays: Students are introduced to both prominent and lesser-heard voices from the Civil War era as they use careful analysis to write evidence-based essays and present a live documentary-style presentation in class.
Honors LA 4B
- Persuasion: The quest to secure voting rights in the United States is the background for this unit's study of the tools of persuasive writing and speaking.
- Poetry: Students read and analyze a work of poetic memoir, then craft their own personal narratives in poetic form, thereby contributing to a collective "history" of their class's lifetimes.
Students must purchase the required books before the start of the course.
-
Format
Our instructors hold classes virtually, in a small-sized (10-16 students) videoconferencing classroom.
-
Homework and projects
Students should expect to spend about 60-90 minutes on homework every week. Homework will include practicing skills learned in class through short answer questions, long-term writing assignments connected to the unit project, and assigned reading in one of the four quarterly textbooks.
