Honors Math 5C/5D

Year-Round Mathematics

Honors Math 5C/5D is the second half of a full year of curriculum for advanced fifth or sixth graders. Most of our students complete Honors Math 5A/5B before taking this course.

In the final course before Prealgebra, students round out their learning with mastery in decimals, square roots, and more. They are also introduced to new topics in sequences, percents, ratios and rates. Students reinforce their critical problem-solving skills by grappling with complex word problems and puzzles in collaboration with their peers and instructors.

Student Placement

To determine if your child is ready for this course, please have them take our Placement Test. Honors Math 5C/5D is often a good starting point for a sixth grader who is new to Beast Academy and beyond Honors Math 5A/5B, but not ready for Prealgebra in the AoPS Online School.

Format

All classes are held in a small-size (10-16 students) videoconferencing classroom run by an expert instructor.

Curriculum

Beast Academy is an elementary school math curriculum developed by Art of Problem Solving to give students the problem-solving foundation they'll need to succeed in any intellectual endeavor. This course covers the Beast Academy 5C and 5D Guide and Practice books. This Alignment Chart shows the curriculum standards covered in the book chapters.

Homework and Exams

There is about 1 to 3 hours of homework each week. There are two timed exams - one in Week 9 and one in Week 18. The homework and exam use Beast Academy Online, whose subscription is included in the tuition for the duration of the course.

Drop and Refund Policies

Please see class drop and refund policies on the tuition page.

"Our homeschooled son is extremely gifted in math and science.  He really feels at home at AoPS Academy.  Through coaching and personal attention at AoPS, he achieved a 5 in AP Calculus at 11 years old and a 4 in AP Statistics at 12.  He also achieved an 800 on SAT II math at 12 years old.  Our son feels very comfortable in the atmosphere of AoPS, where being gifted in math is not looked down on, but treated with respect.  He has truly found his peers at AoPS Academy.

AoPS Academy allows my son to be himself, learn that there are other kids well advanced in math, and gives him the confidence to know that it is OK to be great in math, and that other people will respect and value his ability."
